The Rainbow Puppet Theatre Book

Fourteen Classic Puppet Plays

At the Rainbow Puppet Theatre of the Constantia Waldorf School in Cape Town, South Africa, children enter a magical world of beauty, wonder, and transformation.  Through the puppeteer's art, stories old and new carry eternal truths in a away that brings life and healing to all who behold them.  In this book for everyone to enjoy are fourteen puppet plays that were created by Estelle Bryer and her colleagues for the stage of the Rainbo Puppet Theatre, and that have often been adapted for solo and tabletop puppetry.

I have read through several of them and can vouch that the plays and staging suggestions are superlative.  These are much simpler to perform than those who have never done it might think, and well worth the effort of creating the puppets and learning the plays.  Anyone who sees these plays will be gifted by them.

The plays included are:

  • Jason and the Grey Witch
  • Nursery Rhymes and Stories
  • The Adventures of the Brave Little Rabbit
  • Benjamin and His Christmas Rose
  • Red Riding Hood
  • Mother Holle
  • The Frog Prince
  • Saint George and the Dragon
  • The Little Donkey Prince
  • Hansel and Gretel
  • Snow White and Rose Red
  • Rumpelstiltskin
  • Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
  • Briar Rose

The good people at WECAN are very much to be congratulated - they have produced what is, in my opinion, the finest collection of stories for young children ever published in English (maybe in any language, but others will have to judge that).  Tell Me a Story brings together in one volume over 80 stories told and loved in Waldorf kindergartens throughout North America, and as such really offers a resource that can last throughout a lifetime.

Wherever there are children, the cry of "Tell me a story . . ." is heard, and in Waldorf education, storytelling is an integral (and often favorite) part of each day.  Stories connect us to one another, give us a sense of who we are, and can help to guide us into the future.  Tell Me a Story is filled with treasures for all ages and all occasions.  Whether you are a teacher, parent, grandparent, caregiver, or just a lover of good stories, you will find inspiration and nourishment in these pages.

A Lifetime of Joy

A Lifetime of Joy is a rare and wonderful tribute to Bronja Zahlingen's (1/8/1912 to 1/24/2000) life's work; in return, it is a gift from Bronja to all the children and adults whose lives it will touch and nurture. Just to look through it's pages is to feel the warmth, wisdom and love that every child in her kindergarten felt for so very many beautiful years.

Included in this volume are all the plays from her sparkling Plays for Puppets and Marionettes -- and much, much more. There are songs, wee stories for the seasons and other times, nature tales, circle games, verses. In addition, there is a touching account of Bronja's life and work, and articles for teachers and parents. The two articles, "On Movement, Gesture and Language in the Life of the Young Child" and "The Pedagogical Value of Marionette and Table Puppet Shows for the Small Child" are welcome additions to everyone's understanding. Even the photo on the cover speaks volumes about the wealth we can present to children through simple stories told with marionettes.

In short, this is a great book for anyone working with young children - a shining star over a child's garden.

Movement for the Young Child

A Handbook for Eurythmists and Kindergarten Teachers

Estelle Bryer

New edition

Formerly titled: Eurythmy for the Young Child

Softbound, large format

$24.00

Add a review

Eurythmy for the Young Child is a stunning collection of stories, songs and poems that will serve your children equally well as the basis for eurythmy, storytime, circle time or simple, delightful interludes throughout the day.

Estelle Bryer has had 45 years experience working with kindergarten children as teacher, adviser, puppeteer and eurythmy therapist but specializing as kindergarten eurythmist. The all-encompassing contents are a culmination of her work. The delightful lessons are suitable for circle time or eurythmy lessons (ages 3-8years), and are complete in themselves. They cover the seasons, festivals and stories such as the Turnip or Golden Goose and more, and include written music. They have separate suggestions for use by the kindergarten or eurythmy teacher.

There are also helpful suggestions and instructions for the kindergarten teacher or eurythmist in handling problems, creating moods and using descriptive gestures or vowels and consonants. The importance of eurythmy and the why and how it effects the development of the young child is clearly gone into as well as all the vital elements used for healthy growth. The stories, songs and poems are highly imaginative and fun!

This is another wonderful contribution by our friends at WECAN.

We are so very happy to be able to offer yet another joyous book of gesture games and more by Wilma Ellersiek.  As with all her other books, hand gestures meet up with words, movement and songs in ways that are so warm and delightful it's easy to forget that this loving, warm play is also working to develop children's cognitive capacity and enhance language development. And yet, that is just what is happen -- as the hearts of both adults and children open through these beautiful, lively gestures, so too are the pathways for learning and understanding opened and enhanced.

Wilma Ellersiek passed on not too many years ago.  I think of her often and hope that she is able to look down upon us all and see her gifts for children enacted and embraced by many more than she ever dreamed would know of them. These are wonderful - for everyone.

Here is a beautiful collection of original songs, hand games, touch games, lullabies, and, well, just about everything you could want to create a joyful moment with a child or class of children. I have personally never seen an offering quite like this one - Ellersiek's gift is that the tapestry of her songs and games actually awakens love within the adult which then streams out in joy to the child(ren) with whom the adult plays and sings. These are wonderful! If you have young children in your life, try these. They are like liquid drops of golden sunshine.
