Human Fertility

I must say, it was worth the wait. Linda Knodle has been working for several years on this first book of a series designed to take the place of I Find My Star, the original curriculum guide created along with Tamara Slayton. The good news for teachers, parents and teens is that Linda has succeeded in capturing on paper the clarity, warmth and understanding that she is known for in the classroom.

She has drawn from her years of experience teaching Coming-of-Age classes in Waldorf schools and to other groups, enhanced this experience with extensive research and wrapped it all in a warm enthusiasm that is sure to inspire all teachers who use it.

The curriculum itself offers actual lesson content and syllabii - for that alone I predict it will be beloved. She suggests in-class assignments and homework, as well as discussion topics on a week-by-week basis. In and amongst these suggestions of what to do is woven much discussion of the needs of the group for whom it is being done -- her awareness of adolescent sensitivity truly touches the heart.

Herein lies a pathway for nurturing, supporting and informing our young people in ways that help them discover what is essentially human about themselves and those around them. It is a beautiful book that carries with it seeds of love that are sure to flower as strength and uprightness in those who are touched by it.

Sex Education - A Creative Approach

Hathor the Moon Cow

I think this journey into human sexuality - and how to convey its physical, social and spiritual realities and outcomes to children (at around age 12 for direct teaching) is one of the most refreshing approaches I've ever read. In the author's usual humorous and relaxed style, virtually every topic of importance is touched upon - actually, delved into far beyond the surface - in a way that is open, engaging and utterly unabashed. I can imagine this one volume being of enormous help to both teachers and parents as they guide children into a healthy adulthood.

AWSNA Survey Report

This book summarizes results of a questionnaire sent to every Waldorf high school in North America in 1999. Schools were asked to report (1) their guidelines for senior artistic and/or academic portfolios, (2) whether and what alternatives to college they suggest to their seniors, and (3) what specific social/emotional skills they work on with their students, including stress management, time management, sexuality, mental health, conflict resolution, study skills, communications skills, human boundary issues, listening skills, and life management. Some additional research undertaken by the AWSNA High School Research Project Committee is also included.

Coming of Age curriculum for Grades 5 through High School

I Find My Star - Coming of Age Curriculum

The I Find My Star curriculum guide has gone out of print. Linda Knodle is in the process of developing a new, clearer and better curriculum. She expects it to be available Spring 2007

This pioneering work is a breath of fresh air and a very positive development within the realms of Waldorf Education. Here is an approach to "sex ed" that warmly meets the needs of adolescents within our modern world - in body, soul and spirit.

This fully illustrated, three week lesson plan is adaptable for grades 5 through high school and includes collaborative work with teachers, parents and other caring adults involved with the education of teens.

Its key themes are:

  • A Sense of Destiny - Finding One's Star
  • Puberty and Adolescence in the Past
  • Puberty and Adolescence in Modern Life
  • Modern Stereotypes about Teenagers
  • Communication, Cooperation and Relationship
  • The Beginning of the Male and Female Fertility Cycle
  • The Signs of Puberty and a Woman's Fertility Cycle
  • The Signs of Puberty and a Man's Fertility Cycle
  • When Does Life Begin?
  • Creating a Modern Initiation Experience

Fully illustrated with black & white photos, color lesson book art, and patterns for creating teaching aids for in-class use.
