The Power of Limits
Proportional Harmonies in Nature, Art, and Architecture

Gyorgy Doczi

Softbound, Large Format

Slightly Damaged: upper front right corner has very small fold - otherwise in excellent condition

Regular Price: $25.00

Damaged Price: $19.95

The Power of Limits

The Power of Limits (finally back in print!) is an exposition of the rhythms and harmonies of both natural and artistic forms. I have used its contents for meditative contemplation for many years now, and have not come even close to exhausting the insights and revelations Doczi's remarkable book evokes. Whenever I get frustrated at how slowly postive change comes about, I reach for The Power of Limits to remind myself of the grace and beauty that limitation brings the world. Steiner defined art as "the impress of the spirit upon matter." Doczi shows us what that means.

Why the Setting Sun Turns Red

Stories create strong images for children. Far more effective than moralizing, confrontation, or criticism, pedagogical stories give moral pictures to children. This book eloquently explains the role of the pedagogical story and gives several examples of its use. This is another of the many books I wish I had been available when our children were little - very, very helpful!

Hand Bookbinding

Rudolf Steiner established Bookbinding as one of the required classes in the high school curriculum of the original Waldorf School. In his day, this was actually an essential skill for anyone wishing to build a personal library: books were sold in unbound signatures; it was up to the buyer to create a protective (and hopefully beautiful) cover. In our day, Bookbinding is still taught in Waldorf high schools, and although it is no longer a necessary skill, it is a richly rewarding one.

This is one of those how-to books that has everything you could want in it - it will take you and/or your student(s) step-by-step through the basics of bookbinding, and then introduce you to some very elegant techniques as well. Watson details materials and tools, and even offers some history as well. Everything is illustrated with beautiful and clear drawings and explained clearly and completely. I can't imagine anyone not falling in love with bookbinding by the time they finish looking through the book.

A Study Guide for Rudolf Steiner's Heart-Thinking

Mark Riccio

Softbound

We received a large stack of these books that had been damaged in transit: crushed corners, folded covers, dog eared pages, dents in the cover, etc. None of the damage spoils the contents or readability, but the books are far from new-looking. Mark decided along with us to turn consternation into delight by offering these books at a substantial savings. Enjoy!

Regular Price: $10.00

Damaged Book Price: $4.00

Little Red Riding Hood

The process of learning Steiner's heart-thinking was once described to me (by someone who was not Mark Riccio) as a process of reading and parsing each and every word of Steiner's Philosophy of Freedom (aka Intuitive Thinking as a Spiritual Path) until you were so bored that you left yourself open for a moment of enlightenment. I need to add here that this person said this as a genuine explanation of the process he taught.

Those of you who know me even just a little can imagine how quickly I distanced myself from this process. In retrospect, it is really a shame that I didn't meet Mark Riccio and his approach first, because Mark actually thinks with his heart and loves with his thinking so much that the notion of boredom as a path of inner development never crosses his mind.

Instead, what you will find is an invitation to experience the warmth that Steiner's "intellectual" work can impart; to discover the clear thinking that love can evoke; and a process that is true joy. All of which is so very much closer everything I understand to be in accord with Steiner's suggestions for inner development (e.g., in Knowledge of the Higher Worlds Steiner remarks that the world cannot teach us anything save through our own enjoyment of it).

Mark's Study Guide is a joyous step-by-step instruction which you can undertake alone or share within a group. Coming as it does from the author of an article aptly titled "The Joy of Text" (now a chapter in this book), you can imagine that boredom (which does have its place in our lives, mind you) is not the focus of the process. Here is a path of which I can only say, "Try it, you'll like it." And it will like you, too.

"Das Goetheanum"
The Architectural Impulse of Rudolf Steiner

LightFilled Productions

VHS Video Cassette - 20 minutes

Regular price: $14.95

Clearance Price: $9.95

"

Take a walking tour of not only the current Goetheanum, but also the original "First Goetheanum" that was destroyed by fire in 1924. Through the magic of the camera, LightFilled Productions has taken available photographs and recreated the First Goetheanum - beginning with construction. The camera guides the viewer along an intimate tour of the forms and expanses of this unique building. After the fire of 1924, we see the debris cleared and a new building rise out of its ashes. At the end, we are treated to a view of the surrounding buildings that have been built nearby - inspired by Steiner's vision of architecture.

The effect of this tour is heightened by the absence of narration, with music being the only sound as one "walks" along, pausing to look at these remarkable structures.
